‘Stop the Drop’ Litter Campaign

Earlier this year I happened to be reading a magazine called ‘Countryside Voice’ which is produced by a charity called CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England). There was an article written by the President of the charity, Bill Bryson, about tackling rural litter. Now this article struck a chord with me because whenever I go for a walk around the village I inevitably see litter lying on the ground or dangling in the trees and hedges and wish that I had a litter picker and bag to collect it.

I felt sure I wasn’t the only person who wanted a litter-free environment but I wasn’t sure how I could get a group of ‘litter pickers’ together. So my first port of call was the Parish Council Amenities Meeting when I asked for the support of the council. There are now two councillors, Stan Codling and June Griffin, who have joined me in starting a group in Little Paxton. We have had an initial meeting and I have registered the group on www.litteraction.org.uk. We are called ‘Little Paxton Litter Pickers’ because I liked the alliteration! If you who would like further information or to join the group please email Stan Codling on codlinglyst@aol.com or phone him on 01480 475022.

Just imagine a group of people wearing high visibility jackets with the group’s name across the back, with litter pickers, and rubbish bags to hand making our village a clean and tidy place to live. If you think you would like to join LPLP’s call or email Stan as soon as possible. Remember, the more the merrier!

When was the last time you heard the sound of leather on willow in the village? The chances are unless you lived in Little Paxton before the mid eighties, the answer is never! Are you aware of the strong links the village once had with the game of cricket? Can you imagine anything more relaxing on a warm Sunday afternoon than watching a game of cricket?

Recently, there has been a revival in the game of cricket and residents of the village have expressed a wish to reform the Little Paxton Cricket Club. The Parish Council has listened to the residents of the village and has investigated the possibilities of this. The GOOD NEWS is plans are well under way. We have identified an area on the Playing field that could accommodate a cricket team. We are, however, still looking for more like-minded people who would be interested in either playing, helping set up, umpiring, scoring, helping with refreshments or just supporting a cricket club. Would you be interested? Do you have any suggestions for fund raising events? Would you be prepared to support such an event?

Little Paxton Pre-school

Does anyone out there like figures?!

Little Paxton Pre-School committee will be looking for someone to take over the role of Treasurer by the summer of 2009.

The committee is made up of a friendly group of volunteers who meet once a month to ensure the smooth running of the pre-school and organise fundraising activities for the ongoing improvement of the pre-school and its facilities.  The role of treasurer requires an average commitment of 1-2 hours per week, in addition to any involvement in fundraising.

A handover period of at least several months would be ideal, anyone interested should contact the committee chairman, Claire Course, telephone 01480 471744 in the first instance.

It’s not necessary to have a child at the pre-school, although standard police checks are carried out for all members of the committee.

Huntingdonshire Music School

Do you wish you could play a musical instrument? Or did you learn to play an instrument as a child and wish you had the chance to play it again? Did you know that a fantastic Music School is on your doorstep? Huntingdonshire Music School is based at the Regional College in Huntingdon and has nearly 400 students, ranging in age from 4 to 86! The Music School has been in existence for over 40 years yet many people do not realise that it is there for everyone to enjoy.

Gary Sieling, the Musical Director, describes it as the “happiest music school in the world”, and a visit to the Saturday morning session will show you a bunch of people of all ages, backgrounds and musical experience, having fun and making music. From individual instrument and voice tuition, through theory and aural lessons and finally to the ensembles and bands, everyone finds something to suit their musical needs and aspirations. The bands and ensembles cover all musical aspects, from woodwind to brass; Rock Band to Big Band and students can join the ones best suited to their musical ability.

Would you like more information about Huntingdonshire Music School? If you would like a prospectus, an informal chat about the facilities available, or to arrange a tour of the Saturday morning school, please contact Gary Sieling on 01480 379220. Gary will be happy to answer any questions about the Music School or about participation by our students in your local events. Or take a look at our website: www.humsa.org.uk

There will be old photographs including an aerial photograph of the village in 1946. Please do come along – we are sure you will not be disappointed.

Admission will be free. Programmes will be available price £1, which will include a guided heritage walk around Little Paxton - you might be surprised at the number of historic sites around our village. Refreshments will be available during opening times.

Saturday 18 October open 10.30 am to 4.30 pm.

From 12 noon to 3 pm - David Fletcher, a valuer from Peacocks the local auctioneers based in St Neots, will conduct an Antiques Roadshow. You can come and get your small items valued for a donation of £1 and tickets will be available from 11.30 am.

Meet Colin Howard (who claims to be 49!) local businessman

1. How long have you lived in the village?
24 years, I moved to Little Paxton from St Neots.
2. How long have you been married
11 years, I met my wife at the St Neots Folk Club.
3.What do you enjoy doing?
Travel, cooking (and the washing up!) music especially, all kinds. I would love to play golf, but I’ve tried it and can’t! I also love the sound of church bells, I really think they should restore them to the church, I think it would make it much more of a village to have the bells ringing again.
4.You enjoy cooking, what is your signature dish?
Veal escalope with Spaghetti Bolognese.
5.In your opinion, what could be improved about the village?
The area I live in has become very run down. I would like to challenge the local councillors to come and meet me to see for themselves.
6.What sort of business do you run?
It’s Intalyo Studios, at the Conservatory Village. I do digital printing, banners, badges, bespoke mirror and picture framing, trophy engraving.
7.What is your favourite holiday destination
Ireland, I love all of it.
8.What would be your biggest dream
Make some money and get a bigger house.
9. Is there anything you would like to ask the editorial team?
No, I am very shy and retiring!
10.Tell us a story
When I worked in engineering one of my colleagues went to a meeting and whilst he was waiting noticed a sign writer painting a board. He noticed that the man had spelt ‘liaison’ incorrectly. However, he waited until the man had finished before he pointed it out to him….we didn’t ask Colin his reply!

Open Gardens Day 2009

June 2009 may sound a long time away but for this event early planning is essential. St James’s Church is looking for all types gardens in Little Paxton to be open on Sunday, 21 June in aid of a major re-ordering church project called ‘Church for Tomorrow.’

The project is designed to help maintain our lovely church but also make it more suitable for future needs. The project includes – re-hanging the bells so they can once again be rung, a new heating system which will not only make the church more comfortable but also protect the fabric of the building and also introduce more flexible seating so the church can be used more widely.

So whatever your type of garden we would be delighted if you would open it in aid of our project next June.

Please contact Peter Hagger (01480 477978) who can tell you what would be involved.

Comparisons between Beijing’s Olympics and the 1908 games held in Britain don’t bear thinking about. Britain stepped in at the last minute to host the games when Mount Vesuvius erupted and made it impossible for the games to be held in Rome. Put together in just a few weeks, the total cost off the stadium was only £60,000!

However, one comparison is astounding. A hundred years on and the record for a Briton winning three gold medals in a Summer Olympics was eventually equalled - in 1908 swimmer Henry Taylor and in 2008 cyclist Chris Hoy.
