The new events programme for 2008 is out. You can collect yours from the Visitors' Centre. We have already had the first event, on New Year's Day. Over 350 people came through the centre and many more simply came for a walk. About 50 bird species were seen at this joint event, organised by the Friends and the RSPB. Quite a few telescope-toting dudes stayed until the bitter end in hope of seeing the extremely rare great egret coming in to the cormorant roost, but we were all disappointed and cold by 4.30. The cattle egret that was seen in St Neots had also flown away. Never mind. Both these species are extending their rangers northwards and will be seen here more frequently in future.

On January 6th the Friends organised a work party to clear vegetation at Diddington Pit, while our regular mid-week outdoor volunteers start back to work this week. We also have our annual ten-pin bowling match against (more with than against really) the Hinchingbrooke volunteers.

On the 24th we are taking our voluntary wardens (who man the visitors' centre) to Welney for a look at the Wetlands Trust's splendid new facilities, and the swans of course.
